Maternal lineage
What can Mitochondrial DNA Analsyis do for you?

Maternity Testing
By analyzing the mtDNA between a mother and child, the true biological relationship of maternity can be established.

Sibling Studies
All maternal relatives have the same mtDNA. Siblings have the exact same mtDNA as their biological mother. DNA testing through mitochondrial DNA can prove if two people share the same mother.

Geneology Studies
Since mtDNA is found in old to ancient remains, mtDNA profiles can be traced to tens of thousands of years ago.

Forensic Case Work
mtDNA can be extracted from hair, bones and teeth. If there are unidentified remains, they can be compared to the mitochondrial DNA profile of that of maternal relatives. This has proven to be extremely useful in circumstances involving compromised DNA samples such as: mass disasters, missing persons investigations, or cases involved limited samples of questionable quality.

When to use mtDNA?
mtDNA is the powerful technology to emerge from the DNA testing field in last 10 years. The DNA Identity Testing Center at Bio-Synthesis, Inc. (BSI) is currently sequencing mtDNA samples for maternal lineage and criminal investigations. For more information about mitochondrial DNA analysis, contact us now!

What is mtDNA analysis?

There are two kinds of DNA in the cell – nuclear DNA and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). In any human cell, you can expect to find hundreds of copies of mtDNA, and only two copies of DNA in the nucleus. Mitochondrial DNA analysis is the preferred method of sampling used by forensic scientists. Because mitochondria are structurally strong and protect the DNA they contain, mtDNA can be extracted from hair, bones and teeth. It is passed from generation to generation along the maternal lineage. There is no change in mtDNA from mother to offspring. tDNA allows DNA profiles to be developed from evidence that may not be suitable for other analysis.

DNA Testing
A DNA sample that is old may not have nuclear matter left in the cell, and this could definitely pose a problem for certain DNA analysis. MtDNA, however, is extremely abundant and able to come through when nuclear DNA cannot.

mtDNA is also extremely useful when degraded evidence could have been stored improperly. Sometimes these degraded samples are unable to yield any results with the standards analysis techniques. By using mtDNA, the analysis can be highly effective and accurate.
